Startup of the Week: Dollar For

This week, we’re deviating from our typical startup feature to showcase a nonprofit. Founded by Jared Walker, Dollar For aims to help patients with high hospital bills reduce their costs dramatically. Many hospitals offer discounts, or even bill forgiveness, to patients based on their income. Yet, most people have no idea this policy exists, and if they do, they often have no idea how to go about utilizing it. Dollar For fills this need by both educating patients on the existence of the policy and by directly helping them reduce their bills. The nonprofit guides patients to see if they qualify, prepares each patient’s application for them, and sends it to the hospital. Since its founding, Dollar For has helped patients save over $29 million in medical bills. Read more about the nonprofit and its work here.
